Find where the pressure is low first. Weak hot and cold at every tap points to the supply: check Watercare's outages and that the meter tap is fully open. One weak shower points to its head or mixer. Weak hot with strong cold usually means a low pressure cylinder, or a failing valve on the hot side.
A califont suits a home that wants hot water that doesn't run out and a cylinder cupboard back. A cylinder suits a house running several big showers at once, or one that wants hot water through a power cut. No maker publishes a califont lifespan; the heat exchanger warranty, 10 to 15 years, is the firm number.
A hot water heat pump costs the least to run: under a third of a gas califont or a standard electric cylinder, which cost about the same as each other. Gas still wins on flow and space, bottled LPG costs most, and piped gas carries a fixed daily charge that keeps rising.
Start outside the water heater. Check the switchboard breaker and the isolating switch, ask whether the power or the hot water load control has been off, and on gas, check the bottle, the controllers and any error code. If the breaker trips again, the pilot won't stay lit or a code returns, stop there and book a plumber.
Your hot water cylinder must store water at 60°C or more to control Legionella, and the water reaching your bathroom must be no hotter than 50°C to prevent scalds. A gully trap overflows when the drain beyond it is blocked, and it smells when its water seal dries out or debris builds up. If yours is overflowing, stop running water inside and call Watercare first: they'll tell you whether the blockage is in the public sewer or your own drain.
A few drips while the cylinder heats is normal: water expands as it warms, and a valve lets the extra out. A constant dribble, a steady flow at night or hot water pouring out is a fault, and each one points to a different cause.
Watercare fixes leaks up to your water meter. Anything after the meter is the owner's to fix, but once it's repaired you can usually claim part of the lost water back as a leak allowance.
