Gas hot water systems: califont or cylinder
A gas califont, or continuous flow hot water unit, heats water as you use it, so there is no tank to run cold and no cylinder taking up a cupboard. It is wall-mounted outside and sized to the house so two showers and the dishwasher can run together. We supply and install Rinnai and Rheem units.
Some homes suit a gas hot water cylinder instead, indoor or outdoor, where the existing pipework is set up for it or the household draws a lot of hot water at once. We talk you through both and price the gas hot water system that fits.
Gas hot water repairs and servicing
If your gas hot water is not working, running hot and cold or showing an error code, we find the fault first and repair it where a repair makes sense. Gas califont repair, gas water heater repair and servicing cover most brands already on the wall, califonts and gas cylinders alike.
When an old unit has had its day, we quote a gas hot water replacement or gas hot water cylinder replacement and take the old one away. Every installation and repair is certified by our own licensed gasfitter.

Common questions
My gas hot water is not working. Is it the unit or the gas?
Often neither. It can be the igniter, a sensor, an empty LPG bottle or the water flow. We diagnose before recommending a gas hot water repair or a replacement.
Should I get a gas califont or a gas hot water cylinder?
Most homes are better off with a califont: no tank to run cold, and nothing taking up a cupboard. A gas hot water cylinder can suit a home already piped for one or a household that draws a lot of hot water at once. We look at the house and recommend one.
How often should a gas califont be serviced?
Every couple of years. A service keeps it burning cleanly and catches worn parts before they leave you without hot water.
How long does a gas water heater last?
Around 15 to 20 years for a continuous flow unit that is serviced. If yours is older and playing up, replacement is often better value than a run of repairs.
Can I run gas hot water on LPG bottles?
Yes. Most North Shore homes without natural gas run continuous flow on twin 45 kg bottles with automatic changeover, so you never run out.
